Bhai Dooj, Bhai Duj

Diwali Festival

Bhai Dooj is the last day of five days long festival Diwali. It is also called Bhaiya Dooj and falls on the second day of the new moon. This day is special for celebrating brother sister relation and making their bond stronger. Sisters put tilak on the forehead of his brother praying for his long life and happiness. Sisters offer and feed foods and sweets with their hands to brothers and in return, they offer gifts to the sisters.

Why is Bhai Dooj celebrated ? The legend

It is believed that the God of Death Yamaraj went to visit his sister Yamuna after a long time. Yama’s sister Yamuna welcomed him by putting tilak (tika) on his forehead wishing for his long life and well being. This ritual was supposed to protect his brother from enemies. Considering this event, the tradition of putting tilak by sister on her brother’s forehead is being continued as “Bhai Dooj“.

There is another belief that Lord Krishna after defeating the asura king “Narakasur” went to his sister Subhadra where he was welcomed by putting tulak on his forehead.
